World Heart Day in Wroclaw
On the 27th of September, for the eighth time, the World Heart Day was celebrated in Poland. The main events took place on the Wrocław market square.
The event was organized by Polish Cardiac Society. Healthy World Heart Day this year was calling on everyone to “Work with Heart”. Over 17.2 million people die each year from cardiovascular diseases, making these the leading cause of death worldwide. Yet 80% of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided by controlling the main risk factors: tobacco, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity. This educational activity is especially important in Poland, where more than 50 proc. of all deaths are caused by diseases of the circulatory system.
Huge attention was put to health path which consisted of medical stands, allowing visitors to perform examinations free of charge: blood pressure assessment, cholesterol level, dietary advice, cardiovascular risk calculation. Since the morning those, who visited the Wrocław market square, could consult the experts, cardiologists, dieticians who advised them of benefits of physical activity and healthy diet. During the picnic hundreds of people were evaluated versus score heart risk chart and more then 1200 people had their blood glucose level measured.
Healthy lifestyle was also advised by artists: Mariola Bojarska-Ferenc, Małgorzata Socha and Ania Wyszkoni. The picnic has also been flourished by live events, performed by Majka Jeżowska, Pan Japa, Mime show and Smile Center. Children’s attractions were also abundant. Kids could visit big pneumatic heart and take part in games prepared by animators. Artistic and literary contest for schools has also been settled. About 120 people took part in nordic walking march, which had been organised by Polish Tourist Country-Lovers' Society (PTTK). This year’s celebration of „World Heart day” has been topped by day’s star – Łzy.
The World Heart Day has been celebrated since the year 2000 in more than 100 countries in the world. During this event medical consultations, marches, runs, sports exercises, public debates, scientific forums, concerts and sports competitions are organized.
